Lighting a Thousand Candles

I’ve wrongly advocated for militant personal privacy since college, avoiding social media. I initially believed I was protecting myself and others, but I didn’t realize the opportunity costs.

The opportunity to share ideas, spread positive work, and surprisingly, inspire others. Since starting my post-military life, I joined LinkedIn, Twitter, and started a blog. I first started sharing events in my life as a way to update people on professional changes and was hesitant to share anything on LinkedIn, even job details.

But something clicked, when I share my journey along the path, my enthusiasm was contagious, inspiring others, and helping folks discover opportunities rarely known.

Of all my topics, sharing my Ranked Choice Voting journey brought the most substance to people. By sharing, I know at least 3 people who said they were proud to have joined Veterans for All Voters after hearing me talk about it. They have since become active in their communities, advocating for structural election topics. Multiple non-veterans reached out on LinkedIn saying they were inspired to contribute and that they would love to continue being updated.

Hearing one of those Veterans say, “I joined after discovering Nick Co’s LinkedIn Posts and was inspired by him. I saw all his posts about VAV and I wanted to be part of it,” [Video] brought me to tears in the car. We reconnected on a call about how we had never felt a more important mission in our life, how connected we felt to community, and how proud we will be when we bring Ranked Choice Voting to the Nation.
